Ian MacPhee is a registered trademark agent and has practiced in the field of intellectual property law for more than 30 years. His practice covers all stages of the trademark life cycle, consisting of procurement, opposition and cancellation proceedings, management, strategic counselling and enforcement. It also extends to all aspects of trademark, copyright and unfair competition litigation. Ian also prepares and prosecutes trademark applications and provides opinions on availability, registrability, validity and infringement.


Ian assists clients, ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations, with trademark portfolio management, including trademark selection and implementation of national and international filing and enforcement strategies in accordance with client objectives. Ian advises clients on commercial issues and transactions relating to intellectual property, including the negotiation and drafting of agreements, international coexistence agreements, IP monetization transactions, and the implementation of due diligence investigations.


Ian has appeared as lead counsel before the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal. He has worked on a number of cases that have led to important developments in trademark and copyright law in Canada. He regularly represents clients before the Trademark Opposition Board of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.


Ian served as chairperson of the Canadian International Trademark Association's Amicus Curiae Sub-Committee for INTA for the Asia-Pacific/Canada regions, which successfully intervened, on behalf of INTA before the Supreme Court of Canada in the case of Masterpiece Inc. v. Alavida Lifestyles Inc. [2011] 2 SCR 387.


Ian is consistently recognized by his peers as one of the world's leading trademark attorneys including by the Who's Who of Trademark Lawyers and the World Trademark Review.


Before joining St. Lawrence Law Firm, Ian was a partner at Lapointe Rosenstein Marchand Melançon L.L.P., a corporate commercial firm in Montreal.
